Sept. 23 – DANBURY, Conn. - Bethany College junior linebacker, Donavan Hayden (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern), has added to his list of early-season accomplishments, as he has been named the Corvias Eastern College Athletic Conference Southwest Regional Defensive Player of the Week, announced the ECAC on Tuesday.
Hayden was given the award for his performance in Bethany’s 21-14 overtime victory over Westminster on Saturday. The 5-11 junior posted 14 total tackles, including ten solo stops. During the game he also posted 3.5 tackles for loss and registered one forced fumble and one interception. His interception of the Titan’s Paul Columbo late in the first half was Bethany’s first INT of the season.
So far this season, Hayden ranks third on the Bison roster in both total tackles (20) as well as tackles for loss (5.5). He also currently leads the team in caused turnovers with three. He has forced three fumbles, two of which have been recovered, and also has one pick on the year.
Hayden has helped bolster a Bethany defense that currently ranks first in the conference in sacks (13) and total tackles for loss (31.0). The team also ranks fourth in the PAC in turnover margin (+2) having caused six opponent miscues on the year.
Hayden becomes the first Bison this season to earn an award from the ECAC in any sport. The last Bison football player to earn an ECAC Player of the Week award was Dion Williams (Clinton, Md./Frederick Douglass) on October 22 of 2013.
