Oct. 28 - BETHANY, W.Va. - Bethany College junior Nelson Mitzen was awarded Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Defensive Player of the Week and ECAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against conference foe Waynesburg. These are his first career weekly honors from both the PAC and ECAC.
This past Saturday, Mitzen recorded a total of nine tackles, two fumble recoveries and a timely interception. The pick came on the final play of the fourth quarter deep in Bethany territory to lock up a 31-24 win over PAC rival Waynesburg.
He has continued his stellar season by racking up a team-leading average of 8.1 tackles a game to rank seventh in the PAC. The 6-3, 195-pound free safety also leads the PAC in fumbles recovered with three overall and leads the team with three picks as well with three games to go.
Mitzen continues to improve after his season-opening performance against #18 Otterbein where he had nine tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. At his current pace, Mitzen is in position to improve upon his second team all-conference selection from a year ago when he finished second on the team with 65 tackles and had a team-leading two picks.
“I am very pleased with his performance,” defensive backs coach Marcus Wilder said. “He sealed the victory for us. Nelson had some great tackles that really fired up the defense. It was by far one of his best games.”
A pre-physical therapy major, Nelson is the son of Jim and Alice Mitzen of Waynesburg, Pa.
