Sept. 11 - WEXFORD, Pa. — Bethany College senior Bill Wineberg (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) has been recognized as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Football Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 10.
The 6-2, 200-pound linebacker earned the award after leading the team in tackles in Bethany’s 24-7 victory over Hiram (Ohio) College Saturday. He posted 12 stops, including eight solos, and one sack, as BC recorded their largest win in a season opener since a 17-0 shutout of Shenandoah (Va.) University in 2001. Wineberg’s efforts were instrumental in BC limiting the Terriers to 258 total yards in the contest.
It was also the third consecutive game that the Bison co-captain has notched double-digit tackles, dating back to last season when he had 13 hits against Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University and 11 stops against Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College.
“Bill did what we expected him to do last week,” said Bethany head coach Tim Weaver. “We are looking to him for leadership on defense and he stepped up by making plays and having a very good game. We are very happy to see him to earn Player of the Week.”
A physical education major, Wineberg is the son of Ken and Joanne Wineberg of Pittsburgh, Pa.
