Nov. 25 - WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Bethany men’s basketball team sank nine three-pointers in the first half as they built a 23-point halftime lead and cruised to an 83-58 victory over Ohio-Eastern on the second night of the Wendy’s Classic at West Liberty State.
The Bison (3-2) never trailed in the game, as junior Joe Testa (Amity, Pa./Trinity) started the scoring with a pair of jumpers. That’s when the three-point barrage started, as senior Tyler Morando (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central) canned triples on consecutive trips down the floor, which was followed by a trey from Testa.
Bethany, who went 9-for-15 from the arc in the opening half, pushed their lead out to 26 at one time, but the period closed appropriately with a triple from junior Jay Lyonett (Weirton, W.Va./Brooke) in the closing seconds for a 48-25 advantage at the break.
BC senior Petre Petkovski (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) joined the three-fest with a pair from deep in the opening minutes of the second half, including one that gave the Bison a 57-27 lead with 16 minutes to play. Bethany’s lead jumped to as many as 36, as all 13 Bison who dressed played at least 10 minutes and 11 different players scored in the victory.
Petkovski was the high scorer for Bethany with 13, while Morando dropped in 12 and Testa and Lyonett each scored 11. The point total was a new career-high for Lyonett, as was his team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Dakota Matz (Zanesville, Ohio) finished with eight points and passed off eight assists.
The Panthers were paced by Colin Hudson with 23 and Zach Tolzda with 21.
Bethany will return from the Thanksgiving holiday Saturday when they host Penn State-Fayette at 1 p.m. It will be the final tune-up before the Bison open PAC play Dec. 3 at Thomas More.
