Bethany's Season Ends with 78-72 Loss at LaRoche in ECAC Tournament
Feb. 27 - PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Junior Leslie Addy (Columbia, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) scored a team-high 16 points for the Bethany College men’s basketball team, but LaRoche closed Wednesday’s game with an 8-2 run to edge the Bison 78-72 in an ECAC Tournament Quarterfinal match-up.
The Bison, who were making their ninth straight postseason appearance, finished the season with a 16-11 overall record, while the Redhawks improved to 17-10 and advanced to the ECAC semifinals Saturday at #1 Albright (Pa.) College.
An early three-point play by junior point guard Lawrence Weldon (Baltimore, Md./Poly) helped push BC out to an early 9-6 lead, but LaRoche responded with nine consecutive points to take a lead they held the rest of the first half. Another quick Redhawk spurt, this time a 7-0 run, swelled the home team’s advantage to 33-22 with 4:37 to go in the period.
The Green and White would answer back by closing the half with a 13-6 run to trim the LaRoche lead down to 39-35 at the intermission. Senior Brady Pacific (right - Avonmore, Pa./Kiski) hit two threes during the run and senior Nick Wilcox (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) had four to bring BC back within a reasonable margin.
The Redhawks would string together a couple quick scores early in the second half to take their margin to six points, but the Bison heated up from the arc to regain the lead. Addy canned back-to-back treys and junior Tyrone Smothers (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) buried another, as Bethany went on top 48-47 with 15:33 on the clock.
There would be four lead changes over the next few minutes but the Redhawks would use another run to go in front. A 13-4 burst by the home team had LaRoche on top by a 65-57 margin with seven minutes to play, but Bethany made one more charge. Lay-ups by Addy and Smothers and a triple by Pacific sliced their deficit to one and a few minutes later, junior Kevin Jackson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook) hit a lay-up to tie the score at 70-70 with 3:44 to play.
That Jackson score would be the final BC bucket of the night, as the Bison managed just two free throws down the stretch. Meanwhile, LaRoche regained the lead on two foul shots and had two lay-ins and a dunk to help clinch the win and advance to the next round.
Addy (right) completed a strong junior season by hitting four three-pointers and finishing with 16 markers, as well as a team-high six rebounds. Jackson and Pacific both tallied 11 in the setback, while Wilcox had eight points and five assists and senior Reece Mabery (Natrona Heights, Pa./Highlands) passed out six helpers.
For LaRoche, who held a 36-21 rebounding advantage in the game, forward Joel McIntosh scored 19 points and grabbed nine boards and Ryan Frantz came off the bench to go 4-for-6 from the arc and finish with 16.
