Bison Off to 3-1 Start after 109-70 Win Over PSU-Fayette
Nov. 24 -BETHANY, W.Va. – All 13 players on the roster scored and the defense forced 31 turnovers, including 25 in the opening half, as the Bethany College men’s basketball team coasted to a 109-70 victory over visiting Penn State-Fayette Saturday.
The Bison (3-1) used a string of three-pointers to take control of the game early in the first half. With BC on top 4-2 following a sloppy opening four minutes, junior Leslie Addy (right - Columbia, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) drilled a three to ignite an 18-4 Green and White surge. All of the points during the run came from three-pointers, as the Addy trey was followed by triples from seniors James Barton (Bethel Park, Pa.) and Brady Pacific (Avonmore, Pa./Kiski).
A short time later, senior Reece Mabry (Natrona Heights, Pa./Highlands) canned two straight trifectas and then a conventional three-point play from senior Nick Wilcox (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) lifted the Bison to a 22-6 advantage with 13 minutes left in the half. By the time the first half horn sounded, Bethany sank 9-of-16 from the arc and converted 25 Lion miscues into 31 points in building a 57-30 cushion.
The amount of turnovers slowed in the second half, but the points kept coming for the Bison. Bethany’s reserves scored 36 of the team’s 52 points after halftime, led by nine from junior Devon Braswell (Detroit, Mich./Communication Media Arts) and eight from sophomore David Butcher (Rockledge, Fla./Viera). The Bison also hit the offensive glass hard in the second half, grabbing 11 of their own misses and turning those into 19 second-chance points.
Bethany’s four seniors all tallied double figures to lead the 109-point barrage, which was the highest point total posted by a Bison team in the four years under head coach Andrew Sachs. It was also the most points scored by BC since a 112-31 triumph over Penn State-Fayette in Nov., 2008. Barton (right) poured in 18 to lead the Green and White, while Wilcox turned in 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Mabery notched 13 markers and four steals, Pacific went 4-for-5 from deep to register 12 points and Addy rounded out the high scorers with 11, as well as four steals.
For Penn State-Fayette, David Winns fired in a game-high 24, while Derek Jones came off the bench to cash in 12.
Up next for Bethany is the beginning of PAC play, as the Bison begin defense of their two straight PAC championships by hosting Waynesburg Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
