Feb. 13 - CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Bethany College men’s basketball team led by as many as eight in the second half, but PAC co-leader Thomas More came back to claim a 73-69 victory over the Bison Wednesday night.
The first half saw the Saints (21-3, 14-1) take an early four-point lead, but Bethany (15-9, 9-6) ripped off a 17-3 run to surge out to a 33-23 lead. Junior Leslie Addy (Columbia, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had six during the run, but Thomas More would slow the BC momentum by scoring the final four points of the half to trim the Bison lead to 33-27 at halftime.
Following three foul shots by Thomas More to start the second half, Addy (right) led a quick burst. His steal led to a dunk and foul for a three-point play and Addy scored again following a steal by senior Reece Mabery (Natrona Heights, Pa./Highlands) to take BC’s advantage to 38-30 with just one minute off the clock in the second half.
The Saints followed by scoring 12 of the next 15 points to move back in front. The teams exchanged scores before another TMC run, this one by a 13-3 count, which pushed the home team to a 60-49 advantage. Bethany had one more charge left, as two buckets by senior Nick Wilcox (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and a three by senior James Barton (Bethel Park, Pa.) helped bring the Green and White within two at 65-63 with 2:44 left.
Thomas More quickly responded with the deciding run, as seven consecutive points left Bethany with too large a deficit to overcome and the Bison would fall for the third straight game. The Saints relied on a 45-36 rebounding advantage and a 20-12 margin in points at the foul line to come away with the victory.
Addy would finish as the game’s leading scorer with 20 points and he added five boards and three blocks. Wilcox (right) totaled 14 points, nine rebounds and four rejections and Barton dropped in 12 and made three steals.
Four Saints reached double figures, led by D’Carlo Hayes with 19 points. Chipping in with 16 markers was Drew Mumford and Brandon Housley posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Bethany will complete the regular season Saturday with a road game at Washington & Jefferson at 2 p.m.
