Bison Men Take the Top Spot in PAC Preseason Poll

Nov. 8 -BETHANY, W.Va. –With four starters returning from a team that has won back-to-back championships, the Bethany College men’s basketball team was voted to capture the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) title once again in balloting conducted with the league coaches.

The Bison set a school record for wins last season by going 25-4, including a 14-2 record in the PAC. Bethany then won its conference record 14th PAC title by defeating Waynesburg, Washington & Jefferson and Thomas More in the league tournament to earn the program’s eighth bid to the NCAA Tournament.

This year’s BC team has five of its top six scorers back from last season and earned seven first-place votes and 77 points to top the preseason poll. Coming in second was Saint Vincent with one first place vote and 63 points to edge past Thomas More, who took third place with the final first place vote and 61 points.

Completing the preseason rankings is Thiel with 59 points, Washington & Jefferson with 44, Grove City (33), Geneva (28), Westminster (24) and Waynesburg (16).

"Pre-season polls are what they are, pre-season,” said fourth-year head coach Andrew Sachs, who is 65-21 in his time on the Bison sideline. “We just hope to get better so we are healthy and playing our best basketball at the end of the year. We embrace the high expectations that we have for the program and hope to improve every day. Our four seniors are excited for their final season and have created an environment of success on and off the court for our newcomers.

“We will have a big void to fill in losing two-time, First Team All-PAC forward British Alexander to graduation and how that void is filled will ultimately determine our success this season,” said Sachs. “The league continues to get better every year and it should be a tough road for all of us as we grind through the regular season.”

Bethany’s season gets underway Nov. 15th with a home date against local rival Franciscan. The Bison’s PAC title defense starts Nov. 28th when the Green and White welcome Waynesburg to Hummel Field House.
