Nov. 19 – BETHANY, W. Va. – In a total team effort, the Bethany College men’s basketball program (2-0) defeated The University of Mount Union, 79-61, on Tuesday evening in the Hummel Field House. The Bison led wire-to-wire in the contest, getting double-digit points from all five starters.
The Bison opened the game on a 9-2 run, getting a basket from four different players. Kevin Jackson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook) started the scoring off on a tip-in, followed by a dunk on a breakaway by Leslie Addy (Columbia, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti). Lawrence Weldon (Baltimore, Md./Poly) then made the score 7-2 on a three-pointer and then the Bison went up seven, 9-2, at the 15:54 mark on a layup by Delonte’ Joyce (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis).
Over the next 13 minutes of the first half, the lead would rise and fall, getting as narrow as three points on a three-pointer by the Purple Raiders’ Kyle Scelza with 6:03 remaining in the half.
With the Bison up four points with 2:24 to play in the frame, Bethany surged ahead thanks to a 12-0 run. Seven points by Weldon sparked the run, including two back-to-back, fast break buckets. He also notched the final basket of the half, squeezing through two Mount Union defenders to put up a 32-foot runner which found the net as time expired to give Bethany the 36-20 halftime lead.
The Bison did a great job containing the streaky Purple Raiders shooting, holding Mount Union to just 25 percent from the field in the opening frame. Weldon lead all scorers in the first half with 13 as the Bison shot 46 percent from the field.
The second half began as the first half ended, with the Bison draining three-point buckets. This time, it was Addy who converted on three-of-three in the first 1:30 of the second half to push the Bethany lead to 22 points at 45-23, with 18:29 remaining in the game.
The Bethany lead never got higher than 22 in the contest, but was never in any real danger, as the Purple Raiders got as close as 13 points with just 1:01 remaining in the game. The Bison would go on for the 18-point victory in the contest, 79-61.
In the contest, all five of the Bison starters notched double figures as Joyce put in a game-high 17 points. Addy and Weldon finished with 15 a piece while Jackson totaled 14 on the day. Tyrone Smothers (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) also finished in double figures, notching 10 points in the game.
Joyce, who notched a career-high in points in his first game of the season, notched another first in a Bison uniform. He came away with his first-career double-double, finishing the game with 14 rebounds to go along with his 17 points.
The Bison outrebounded their opponent for the second straight game, notching 45 compared to Mount Union’s 39. Bethany also totaled 14 offensive rebounds which led to 13 second-chance points. Jackson totaled nine boards to go with his 14 points, while Addy notched eight rebounds and Smothers grabbed seven.
The Green & White also controlled the paint, outscoring the Purple Raiders 32-22 in the lane on the day.
The Bison can also credit their defensive prowess for the victory as Bethany held Mount Union to just 35 percent shooting over the course of the day and did not allow a single free-throw attempt in the first half. Overall, Bethany outscored the Purple Raiders 20-7 in points from the charity stripe.
Bethany will be back in action on Saturday, November 23 as they take to the road for a bout with Penn State – Dubois. The contest is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
