Dec. 15 - WEXFORD, Pa. – Bethany freshman Lance Beckwith (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God Christian Academy) has been selected as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 15.
Although the Bison (5-4) suffered a 98-94 loss in overtime Saturday at Geneva, Beckwith had a huge outing. He scored 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting, grabbed four rebounds and made two steals. After Bethany trailed for much of the second half, Beckwith’s jumper tied the game at 63 with 6:16 to play. Two possessions later, his steal and lay-up gave BC the lead and he would score 11 points in the final 6:16, but Geneva forced overtime with a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded at the end of regulation.
In OT, Beckwith scored to open the extra session, but the Golden Tornadoes would surge out to a 95-89 lead. Bethany battled back and Beckwith’s three-point play with 35 seconds remaining made it a 95-94 game. However, the Bison missed the go-ahead three on their next possession and Geneva secured the win with two late foul shots.
In his first season for the defending PAC champions, Beckwith has supplied the Bison with a spark off the bench. He is averaging 9.0 points per game and is ranked in the PAC in the following categories: eighth in free throw percentage (77.3), ninth in field goal percentage (52.5) and ninth in assists (2.43).
“This is a great honor for Lance, especially since it came after a loss,” said Bison head coach Mike Summey. “I know he would gladly trade this for a victory, but his play was a big reason why we were in position to win that game. Lance is just starting to scratch the surface of what he can do and hopefully Saturday is a springboard for the rest of the season.”
Undecided on a major, Lance is the son of Levi and Lisa Beckwith of Raleigh, N.C.
