Bethany Pulls Out 7-5 Win at Defiance

March 13 - DEFIANCE, Ohio – Senior Kyle Arrington (Jackson Twp., Ohio/Jackson) and sophomore Trey Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) scored two goals each and junior goalie C.J. Studnicky (Severna Park, Md.) made 14 saves to lead the Bethany College men’s lacrosse team to a 7-5 victory at Defiance Wednesday afternoon.

The Bison (1-3) were forced to come from behind early, as the Yellow Jackets (0-4) scored in the game’s initial goal just 2:18 into the contest. A Defiance penalty put BC a man up and the Green and White took advantage to score the tying goal. Sophomore Vince Frammartino (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) notched the tying goal at the 6:45 mark of the first quarter. A little over 90 seconds later, junior Travis Granich (Huntington, W.Va.) scored his first goal of the season and the Bison had a 2-1 advantage after one quarter.

Goals by Tyler Clark and James Lopez put the home team in top 3-2, but just 29 seconds after Lopez’s tally, Bethany evened the game again with an unassisted goal by Arrington (right). That would be the final goal of the opening half and the game went to intermission tied at 3-3.

The back-and-forth nature of the game continued through the third period. Bethany grabbed the lead on a score by Moore around the midway point of the quarter. Studnicky kept BC in front for most of the rest of the period, as he made six stops in the third, but the Yellow Jackets finally got one past him with 2:34 left to even the score again at 4-4.

The Bison would grab the lead back for good just before the end of the quarter. A pair of failed clears came back to haunt Defiance, as Bethany sophomore Brendan Wessells (Severna Park, Md.) scored with 31 seconds to go and Bethany carried a 5-4 lead into the final period.

The Yellow Jackets nearly tied the game again five minutes into the fourth quarter, but a shot rang off the post. Then at the 8:27 mark, following another failed clear by the Jackets, Moore scored again for his second of the day and fourth of the season to give Bethany a 6-4 cushion with 8:27 to play.

It was not a two-goal lead for long, as Defiance scored 23 seconds after Moore’s strike to get back within a goal. The Yellow Jackets would have four more shots to try to get the equalizer over the next six minutes, but Studnicky turned two aside and the others were off the mark. Bethany would put the game away with 1:22 on the clock, as Wessells assisted on Arrington’s second goal of the game and team-leading fifth of the year to clinch BC’s first road win as a varsity program.

The young Bethany defense played its top game of the year in front of the netminder, as sophomore Kyle Lehosit (Bridgeport, W.Va.) had four ground balls and forced two turnovers and freshman Aaron Bynum (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) also had four ground balls.

Bethany will return home for its next three games, including a pair this weekend. The Bison will host Hope (Mich.) College Friday at 5 p.m. and then take on Hiram (Ohio) College Saturday in a 2 p.m. start time at Bison Stadium.
