Bison Lacrosse Drops ORLC Decision to St. Vincent

April 14 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College lacrosse team tallied five second-half goals, including two by freshman Jacob Schiffer (Monkton, Md./Hereford), but ultimately fell 15-5 to St. Vincent College in Ohio River Lacrosse Conference action on Tuesday evening.

The Bearcats came out of the gates strong in the first quarter, using costly penalties by the Bison against them. The Green & White committed three infractions over the first seven minutes of play, and St. Vincent capitalized on each one, scoring on three-straight man-up opportunities. The Bearcats would then find the net three more times in the first half, as the Bison saw themselves trail 6-0 at the break.

In the second half, the Bison cracked the scoring column with just two and a half minutes gone in the third quarter. Schiffer picked off a long pass from the St. Vincent defense and brought back the other way, finding Jake Holland (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) with a solid pass in front of the net. Holland then buried the shot in the top-right corner of the net to put the Green & White on the board.

The Bison would add one more goal in the third frame, taking advantage of a man-up opportunity. Lamont Sweeny (Columbia, Md./Reservoir) controlled the offense from behind the net, during the extra-man chance, eventually finding Schiffer who buried a shot from 15-yards out for his first goal of the game. Bethany, however, was outscored 4-2 in the third frame, and found themselves down 10-2 heading into the fourth.

In the final quarter, Bethany would total three more goals in the contest, with both Jordan Horne (Marysville, Mich./Marysville) and Brendan Wessells (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) notching their first goals of the game. Schiffer also tallied his second of the night, posting the final score of the game with just 29 seconds to play to round out the scoring at 15-5 in favor of St. Vincent.

Offensively in the game, Schiffer and Holland each led the way, tallying three points apiece. Schiffer’s three points marked the third time this season that the freshman has totaled at least three in a contest. It also marked his second multi-goal outing of the season. For Holland, the multi-point game was his tenth of the year, and his fifth in a row. His three points gave him 54 on the season, while he also upped his assist total to a conference-best 33.

Other point scorers for the Bison included Sweeny, Horne and Wessells. Wessells scored his 15th goal of the season while Horne added number 13 on the year. Sweeny finished the day with one assist, giving him seven assists and 13 points in 2015.

The Bison will be back in action on Saturday, April 18, when they host Mt. Saint Joseph for their final home contest of the regular season. The ORLC matchup is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
