April 9 - GREENVILLE, Pa. – Thiel scored seven times in the first quarter, including three in a span of 39 seconds, and the Bethany College lacrosse team could not recover in suffering a 22-5 loss on the road Tuesday afternoon.
The Tomcats scored less than three minutes into the game and then posted three goals between 10:38 and 9:59 of the initial period. The Bison trailed 7-1 after the first quarter with the lone BC goal coming from senior Kyle Arrington (right - Jackson Twp., Ohio/Jackson). The teams scored two each in the second quarter, with Bethany’s strikes coming from Arrington and sophomore Brendan Wessells (Severna Park, Md.), and the Thiel lead stood at 9-3 at halftime.
The Bison posted two goals in the third period, with both coming from senior Zach Gordon (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) , but Thiel had five goals in the same quarter and added eight more in the fourth period to complete the scoring.
Arrington and Gordon both finished the afternoon with two goals and one assist each, while Wessells had a goal and junior Travis Granich (Huntington, W.Va.) assisted on a score. Freshman Matt Chicoine (New Cumberland, Pa./Mechanicsburg) scooped a team-leading five ground balls and junior C.J. Studnicky (Severna Park, Md.) made 17 saves in the game.
Bethany will be at home for its next contest, which comes Saturday when the Bison host Bridgewater (Va.) College at 2 p.m.
