Sept. 14- Bethany, W.Va.- Senior Arkangelo James (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) scored the game-winner in the 97th minute as the Bethany College men’s soccer team (3-4) defeated the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg (0-6), 3-2, in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon at Hoag Field.
Senior Adam Gibboney (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) played a great ball over the top of the UPG defenders and right to James, who shot the ball into the left side of the net in the 97th minute to lift the Bison to a 3-2 victory.
Freshman Callum Appleby (Maidstone, United Kingdom/ Maidstone Grammar School) earned his third victory of the season, as she made one save for the Bison.
Bethany outshot UPG 28-12, but Bobcat goalkeeper Brandon Galley kept the game close as he recorded eight saves.
Jeremy Niemiec gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute, as he fired a shot on net which deflected off a Bison defender and hit the right goalpost but went into the net.
Senior Lamine Balde (Guinea/William L. Sayre) tied the game at one for the Bison in the 58th minute. James slotted the ball into the center of the six yard box to Balde, and he fired it past the keeper.
One minute later, James gave the Bison a 2-1 lead. Freshman Jack Waters (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) played a great ball over the top of the Bobcat defenders and right to James, who shot the ball into the right side of the net.
Mike Dawdy tied the game at two in the 74th minute, as he scored from the top of the eighteen yard box.
Bethany returns to action on Wednesday, September 18, when they host Marietta under the lights at Bison Stadium at 8:00 p.m.
