Oct. 16- BETHANY, W.Va.- The Bethany College men’s soccer team defeated Waynesburg, 2-1, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference match on Wednesday afternoon at Hoag Field.
The Bison mustered up plenty of offense as they outshot the Yellow Jackets 18-15.
Senior Lamine Balde (Guinea, West Africa/William L. Sayre) led the Bison with eight shots on the afternoon.
Freshman Callum Appleby (Maidstone, United Kingdom/ Maidstone Grammar School) earned his fifth victory of the season for Bethany as he made six saves.
Balde gave the Bison a 1-0 lead as he scored his seventh goal of the season in the 11th minute. Junior Nick Turner (Huntington, W.Va./St. Joseph Central Catholic) played a great through-ball to Balde and Balde chipped the Yellow Jacket goalkeeper.
The Bison outshot the Yellow Jackets 8-4 in the first half and took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Senior Arkangelo James (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) gave the Bison a two goal advantage with his 13th goal of the season. Sophomore Ian Shephard (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) put a great shot on net which hit the post and James got to the rebound and put it into the empty net. James’ goal gives him 61 career goals which ties with him with Sandy Mick for third all-time in Bethany history.
Tim Fields scored Waynesburg’s first goal of the match in the 68th minute to cut the Bison lead to 2-1 but it was not enough as Bethany went on for the 2-1 victory.
Bethany returns to action on Saturday when it travels to take on Penn State-Beaver in its non-conference finale at 2:00 p.m.
