Men’s Soccer’s Rally Comes Up Short Against Washington and Jefferson On Senior Day

Oct. 30- BETHANY, W.Va.- The Bethany College men’s soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to Washington and Jefferson in its final regular season home match on Wednesday afternoon at Hoag Field.

Seniors Arkangelo James (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), Dustin Maiolo (Stevensville, Ontario/St. Michael), Lamine Balde (Guinea, West Africa/William L. Sayre) and Adam Gibboney (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) were honored before today’s match.

With a goal scored in today’s game, James is now tied with Sainey Sanyang for second all-time in Bethany history with 66 career goals.

Jon Best earned the victory for the Presidents’ as he recorded eight saves on the afternoon.

The Presidents jumped out to a 1-0 lead as James Calvert scored in the first minute of action.

Adam Suter gave W&J a 2-0 lead in the 39th minute, as he put a shot on net which hit a Bethany defender but managed to end up in the back on the goal.

Bethany outshot W&J 11-8 in the first half but would trail 2-0 at the halftime break.

Brian Hanna netted W&J’s third goal of the match in the 47th minute.

Bethany responded to the three goal defecit and kept creating opportunities to get back into the game.

The continued pressure paid off, as James crossed the ball and Balde was on the receiving end and he vollied it into the net to cut the Bison deficit to two in the 52nd minute.

Junior Nick Turner (Huntington, W.Va./St. Joseph Central Catholic) gave a great pass to James and shot the ball past Best in the 71st minute as the Bison would trail just 3-2.

Bethany outshot W&J 25-13 for the game but would come up on the short end, as the Presidents would take the victory 3-2.

The Bison travel to Beaver Falls, Pa for its regular-season finale on Saturday when they face Geneva at 7:00 p.m.
