Men's Tennis Falls In Tightly Contested Matchup with St. Vincent

April 14 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College men’s tennis team played close matches throughout the day, but ultimately fell by a 6-3 score to St. Vincent College in PAC play on Tuesday at the Mary Ewing Tennis Center.

The difference in the contest was doubles action, as the Bearcats swept doubles play from the Green & White to take a 3-0 lead. The closes doubles match of the day came at No. 3 doubles, as freshman Mason Schoonover (Elkins, W. Va./Elkins) and Marcus Hooks (Stamford, Conn./Brien McMahon) fell in a tie break, 9-8. The tiebreaker set was just as close for the Green & White, as Hooks and Schoonover fell 8-6 for the matche’s final point.

The other two matches proved just as intense as both the doubles pairings of Will Cazares (Corpus Christi, Texas/Tuloso-Midway) and David Camacho (Corpus Christi, Texas/Tuloso-Midway), as well as Jared Roque (Munster, Ind./Munster) and Kyle Booker (Forrest Park, Ga./Forest Park) fell by 8-6 scores. Cazares and Camacho dropped their decision to Chris Andrejcik and Vince Anto at No. 1 doubles, while Roque and Booker fell at No. 2 doubles to Scott Reichard and Tyler Brinton.

In singles play, the two schools split the points, with each team grabbing three apiece. The Bearcats capture No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 singles, while the Bison tallied victories at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles. The split in singles play gave St. Vincent the 6-3 advantage in the final score.

Just like in doubles play, singles action proved to be highly competitive as three of the six matches went three sets. Camacho took the first set from Anto at No. 2 singles, before ultimately falling in the final two sets, 6-4, 6-2. Hooks also performed well, posting a 6-4 win in set one. However, he too also fell in the final two sets (6-3, 6-2) to Patrick McGee at No. 6 singles.

The lone three-set winner for the Bison came from Booker at No. 4 singles. Competing against Tyler Brinton, Booker notched a first-set victory by a 6-4 score. After falling 7-5 in the second set, Booker battled hard to take set three by a 6-2 score. The win improved Booker’s overall record to 5-7 in singles play on the year.

Both Roque and Schoonover needed just two sets to dispatch of their Bearcat opponent and grab victories in their respective flights. Roque defeated Scott Reichard 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, while Schoonover dominated at No. 5 singles, defeating Dalton Yezovich 6-2, 6-1. The victory for Schoonover pushed his individual mark to 11-1 on the season while also improving his record at No. 5 singles to 5-1. Roque’s win gave him four singles victories on the season, three of which have come in the third flight.

The Green & White will take one day off before returning to Presidents’ Athletic Conference action on Thursday, April 16. Bethany will compete against Washington & Jefferson at the Mary Ewing Tennis Center at 4:00 p.m.
