Bison Fall Twice In Conference Clash With Thomas More

April 18 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College softball team (12-18, 8-6 PAC) ran into some stout pitching as they were swept by Thomas More College by identical, 6-0, scores in conference doubleheader action.

In game one, the Saints struck early, taking advantage of three hits and two Bison errors to put up five runs in the bottom of the first inning. They would then tack on one more run in the bottom of the fourth to post the 6-0 score.

The Bison were held in check in game one, as they mustered two hits, getting one each from Deanna Mihalco (Patterson, N.Y./Brewster) and Ashlee Brill (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster).

On the mound, Kelsey Bish (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) pitched well, allowing just two earned over four innings. Kadie Kelly (Royal Oak, Md./St. Michaels) also performed well, pitching two strong innings, allowing just one hit.

In game two, the contest started as a pitchers duel between the Saint’s Mamee Salzer and Bethany’s Kiersten Conwell (Washington, Pa./Chartiers Houston). Both pitchers combined to allow just two hits through the first three innings, as both teams notched one each in their respective halves of the third.

Thomas More finally broke through in the top of the fourth on a RBI groundout by Alex Walter to make the score 1-0. The Saints would then tack on five more runs in the game, getting home runs from Haley Schuemake and Salzer to round out the 6-0 tally.

Offensively, Jessica Kusnierz (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) reached base twice, while Kayla Kelly (Pasadena, Md./Institute of Notre Dame), Sarah Coss (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) and Kadie Kelly all notched hits.

On the mound, Conwell allowed just one earned run on six hits over six innings of work. She also allowed no free passes while striking out three Saints.

The Bison will be back in action on Saturday, April 19, when they play host to Baldwin Wallace University in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
