Feb. 19 – GREENVILLE, Pa. – Coming off a 19-19 season (10-8 PAC) a year ago, the Bethany softball program was selected third in the 2014 PAC Softball Coaches Preseason Poll, which was released on Wednesday.
Three teams in the poll earned at least one first-place vote with the Saints of Thomas More College being selected as the favorite to repeat as PAC champs with 95 total points. Geneva College was selected in second with three first-place votes and 89 total points.
The three, four and five spots were all separated by just four points as the Bison (69) edged out Westminster (68) for third place. The Titans nabbed the fourth spot while W&J was picked fifth with 65 points.
Rounding out the poll was Thiel (48), Waynesburg (41), Saint Vincent (39), Grove City (25) and Chatham (11).
The conference also announced a list of “Players to Watch” from every team, and two Bison were honored. Junior pitcher Kiersten Conwell (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) and sophomore outfielder Kayla Kelly (Pasadena, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) were among the conference honorees. Kelly earned Second-Team All-PAC honors last season as she hit .371 with 14 RBI. Conwell headlined the pitching staff, leading the team with 72 strikeouts while posting seven wins.
The Bison will open the 2014 campaign against SUNY New Paltz on Feb. 28, at the 2014 Beach Blast hosted by Virginia Wesleyan in Virginia Beach.
