April 19 - BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College softball team overcame a six-run deficit in game two of a doubleheader with Baldwin Wallace to earn a split with the Yellow Jackets on Saturday. The Bison dropped game one, 2-0, before rallying to take game two, 9-7.
In game one, the Bison had a hard time getting anything going offensively, as the Green & White mustered four hits in a 2-0 defeat.
The Yellow Jackets got both of their runs in a two-run third inning off of starter Kiersten Conwell (Washington, Pa./Chartiers Houston). Despite allowing the two runs, Conwell pitched effectively, and worked herself out of some tight spots. She allowed 12 hits in the game, but just the two earned runs as she stranded 11 Yellow Jackets on base.
Offensively, the Bison were led in game one by Sarah Coss (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara), who went two-for-three at the plate. Taylor Solomon (Beltsville, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and Candace Pacheco (Fall River, Mass./B.M.C. Durfee) accounted for the other two hits in the contest.
In game number two, the game didn’t start favorably for the Bison as Baldwin Wallace sent 14 batters to the plate in a six-run first inning. However, the Bison would respond with an offensive outburst of their own.
Bethany would get on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Jessica Kusnierz (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) singled home Solomon to make the score 6-1.
The Bison would then pull even with the Yellow Jackets, scoring five runs in the bottom of the third inning. Deanna Mihalco (Patterson, N.Y./Brewster) led off the inning with a double to right field. Two batters later, Kayla Kelly (Pasadena, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) laid down a bunt, and an error by the second baseman allowed Mihalco to score from second. The next batter was Coss who singled to right field, plating Emili Garretson (Winfield, W. Va./Winfield) and Kelly to pull the Bison within two (6-4).
With runners on first and second and two out in the same inning, Kusnierz came through with a double to right field, allowing Ashlee Brill (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) and Marissa Bosley (New Martinsville, W. Va./Magnolia) to cross the plate, tying the game at 6-6.
In the next half inning for the Green & White, the Bison would complete the comeback, striking for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mihalco once again led off the inning with hit, singling to right field. A Kayla Kelly single and a walk drawn by Bosely loaded the bases for Solomon, who promptly unloaded the bags with a double off the center field wall to give Bethany a 9-6 advantage.
That would be enough for pitcher Kelsey Bish (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) who allowed just one more earned run over the rest of the contest, giving Bethany the 9-7 victory and a split of the twin bill.
After allowing six runs on five hits in the first inning, Bish was back to her old ways, allowing just two more hits and one earned over the next six innings of play to pick up her seventh victory of the season.
Offensively, three different Bison recorded multiple RBI in the game. Solomon led the way, reaching base twice and recording a career-high three RBI. Kusnierz and Coss each added two RBI in the contest. Kelly, Mihalco and Kusnierz all finished with two hits, apiece.
The Bison will be back in action in their final home contest of the season when the host the Pioneers of Marietta College on Tuesday, April 22. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
