BETHANY, W.Va. — Bethany College is pleased to announce Henry Howard, a distinguished alumnus of the Class of 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in communications, as the recipient of the 2023 Communications Wall of Fame Award. This prestigious honor recognizes Howard’s outstanding contributions to the field of communications and journalism throughout his career.

Howard embarked on his career in the newspaper industry, beginning as an intern at Wheeling Intelligencer. His talent and dedication quickly propelled him to become a full-time copy editor. Over the years, Howard’s career journey took him to six different newspapers across the United States. His significant accomplishments include his role as managing editor of the Lafayette (Ind.) Journal & Courier Media Group. In this capacity, he played a pivotal role in transitioning to a digital-first publishing cycle and launching the first “Berliner-style” newspaper in North America, garnering global acclaim within the industry.

In 2012, during a period of significant changes in the newspaper industry, Howard assumed the position of deputy director of media and communications for The American Legion, the nation’s largest veterans service organization with 2.5 million members. Since joining The Legion, Howard has overseen the nation’s “best-read” monthly magazine, pioneered the creation of an award-winning weekly podcast, and spearheaded the evolution of the organization’s digital media portfolio.

The Bethany College community extends a warm invitation to alumni, faculty, students, and friends to join us in celebrating Howard’s exceptional achievements at the 2023 Communications Wall of Fame induction ceremony. The induction ceremony will take place on Friday, Sept. 29, at 5 p.m. in the lobby of the Communication and Media Arts (CMA) Department at Bethany House.
