Oct. 12- ALTOONA, Pa.- The Bethany College women’s swimming and diving team won eight events as it defeated Penn State-Altoona 116-68 in its season-opener on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Marina Baker (Winchester, Va./Sherando) and freshman Christine Pray (Canton, Ohio/Canton ) each won two events and swam a leg in the 400 yard freestyle relay (4:03.88) that finished in first place.
Baker continued her great form that she displayed last year as she won the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:24.61 and won the 100 yard freestyle in 57:01. Pray was impressive in her collegiate debut as she won the longest event of the meet, the 1,000 free, with a time of 11:38.71 and put together another great swim in the 500 yard freestyle as she touched the wall in first place with a time of 5:43.65.
Sophomore Taylor Jacobs (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) put together three great swims for the Bison as she took a first place in the 200 free (2:12.02), finished in second in the 500 free to complete a first and second place finish for the Bison in the 500 free (6:02.64) and anchored the 400 free relay.
Sophomore Alexi Pyles (Los Angeles, Calif./GHCHS) had a solid swim in the 100 yard butterfly, as she touched the wall in first place with a time of 1:04.52 and also swam the third leg of the 400 free relay.
Freshman Leah Widmeyer (Summit Point, W.Va./Washington ) had a great collegiate debut for Bethany as she glided through the water in the 100 yard backstroke to a first place finish with a time of 1:12.07.
On the men’s side the Bison put together an impressive performance but fell 142-55.
Sophomore Brandon Martell took first place in both diving events for the Bison.
Bethany returns to the pool for its next meet on Friday, October 25 when it travels to Franciscan.
