March 25 – BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Bethany College track & field teams competed at the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat Kickoff Classic on Friday. Both the men’s and women’s team earned second place in the meet.
Kyle Minger (Richmond, Ohio/Edison Local) led the way for the Bison, breaking the Bethany College record in the 200m. Minger recorded a time of 21.98, breaking his old mark of 22.05 set in 2015. The senior also placed third in the high jump (1.75m).
Andre Butler (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) took home a first-place finish in the high jump (1.80m), narrowly edging out teammate Aaron Frye (1.80m) through the tiebreaker who placed second. Butler collected a second-place finish in the 200m (22.31) as well.
The relay team of Byron Mayers (Brownsville, Pa./Browsville), Minger, Butler and Umar Moore (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) impressed in their first race in the 4X100 relay with a mark of 42.21. Moore also turned in a first-place finish in the long jump (6.64m).
In the 1500m, Donald Bierhals (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) ran to first overall for the first victory of his collegiate career. Bierhals finished with a final time of 4:18.71. Junior Ryan Donnelly (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) earned third in the race (4:19.26) while placing first in the 5000m (15:59.84).
Khallid Young (Pittsburghf, Pa./Penn Hills) performed well in the 400m, placing second with a time of 51.70.
For the women, Maria Jackson-McBride (Spotsylvania, Va./West Potomac) picked up a first-place finish in the 200m (26.29) and Heather Grinkley (Woodbrigde, Va./C.D. Hylton) collected first in the triple jump (9.65m).
Patience Frazier was impressive in both of her events, earning first in the javelin (34.80m) and third in the shot put (32 – 1.00 ft.).
In the 1500m on the women’s side, Kelsea Matz (Hedgesville, Va./Hedgesville) and Lauren Simpson (Washington, Pa./Trinity) finished second and third, respectively. Martz crossed the finish line in 5:24.28 while Simpson turned in a time of 5:28.00.
Leighanna Frantz (East Liverpool, Ohio/East Liverpool) went on to place second in the high jump with a height of 4 – 9.75 ft. Ashley Borsch (Richmond, Ohio/Edison Local) competed in the 100 hurdles, finished third overall (16.11).
The men’s team totaled 153 points while the women’s team had 130. Both teams finished second to West Virginia Wesleyan College in the meet.
The Bethany College outdoor track & field teams will be back in action on Saturday, April 2 as they host the Bethany Invitational at 11:00 a.m.
