May 1 – GROVE CITY, Pa. – Looking to better their personal times and make a run at a possible qualification to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships, a handful of athletes from the Bethany College men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Grove City College Family Weekend Invitational on Friday.
On the men’s side, a total of four Bison competed on the day, including Andre Butler (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville), Anthony Thompson (Colquitt, Ga./Miller County), Shawn Burns (Weirton, W. Va./Weir) and Dillon Handy (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance). Both Butler and Thompson notched a top-six finish in the 100-meter dash. Butler placed fifth with a time of 11.18, while Thompson raced to a sixth-place mark with a time of 11.23. Burns tallied a 12th-place finish in the event with a mark of 12.35.
Both Butler and Burns also competed in the 200-meter dash, with Butler tallying a fourth-place mark (22.59) while Burns finished with a time of 25.26. Handy competed in just one event on the day, capturing a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles by finishing with a time of 59.33.
On the women’s side, both Heather Grinkley (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) and Lauren Rao (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) competed well on the day, posting multiple top-five finishes. Grinkley tallied a victory in the long jump at the invitational, placing first out of 13 competitors with a leap of 4.72 meters (15-05.75). She also placed fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.10.
Rao notched two top-three finishes on the day, taking third in both the 100-meter dash (12.96) as well as the 200-meter dash (27.05).
Two more Bison will compete this weekend as juniors Umar Moore (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) and Kyle Minger (Richmond, Ohio/Edison Local) will take part in the Jessie Owens Invitational hosted by The Ohio State University.
