March 29 – NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Bethany College track & field teams recently competed at the Titan Winter Invitational, hosted by Westminster College on Sunday afternoon.
On the men’s side, the Green & White were led by a trio of victories, including a win for junior Umar Moore (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) in the long jump. Moore posted a distance of 22’ ¼” to take the victory in the event, beating out fellow Bison Jucqui Taylor (Uniontown, Pa./Uniontown) who notched a second-place finish with a leap of 19’6 ¼”.
The other individual victory of the Bison came from junior Kyle Minger (Richmond, Ohio/Edison Local) who captured a victory in the 800 meter run. Minger posted a time of 1:59.47 in his first collegiate competition in the event. The duo of Minger and Moore also combined with seniors Shawn Burns (Weirton, W.Va./Weir) and Aaron Thompson (Colquitt, Ga./Miller County) to capture first in the 4x100 relay. The team captured a time of 43.46 to win the event while also qualifying them for the ECAC Championships (needed a 43.75 to qualify).
Other notable performances for the men included Shae Long (Steubenville, Ohio/East Liverpool), who posted a second-place finish in the high jump, notching an ECAC qualifying mark of 6’4 ¼”.
The Green & White also performed well in the 100-meter dash, as three different athletes finished in the top five. Moore ran to a second-place finish (11.58) while Thompson (11.70) and Antonio Dawkins (Fort Hill, S.C./Fort Hill) (11.84) finished third and fifth, respectively.
On the women’s side, both Megan Butler (Harrisburg, Pa./Commonwealth Connections) and Jessica Olson (Moon, Pa./Moon) posted individual victories on the day. Butler took home top honors in the 400 (1:04.71) while Olson captured a first-place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:35.40.
Along with her individual win, Butler also helped the women’s 4x100 relay team to a first-place mark, finishing with a time of 52.10. Other members of the relay team included Heather Grinkley (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton), Lauren Rao (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) and Kiera Goolsby (Washington, Pa./Washington).
Rao also posted a top-three finish individually, finishing second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.66. Other top three finishes included Elizabeth Timas (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) in the 800 (2:35.85), Ashley Borsch (Richmond, Ohio/Edison Local) in the 100 hurdles (17.07), and Shelva Burns (Weirton, W. Va./Weir) in the 200 (31.20).
The Green & White will be back in action on Saturday, April 4, when they host the Bethany Invitational at Bison Stadium. The meet is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.
