March 11 – MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Bethany College track & field teams opened the outdoor portion of their 2015-16 season as they competed in the first day of the Coach O Coastal Carolina University Invitational on Friday. The Green & White posted three top-five finishes, including a top performance by junior Andre Butler (Poolesville, Md/Poolesville) in the 100-meter dash.
On the men’s side, Butler, Umar Moore (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) and Kyle Minger (Richmond, Ohio/Edison Local) continued the success that they started in the indoor season, with each athlete posting a top-four finish in their respective events.
Butler led the way for Bethany, posting a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash. Butler finished the race with a time of 10.98, coming just .01 seconds from the Bison school record of 10.97 currently held by Marcus Johnson (2010).
Moore posted a third-place finish out of a field of 25 competitors in the finals of the long jump, posting a best mark of 23-01.00. Minger also tallied a top-five time in the 800-meter run, finishing the race with a time of 2:00.70.
Other top times on the day for the Bison included Ryan Donnelly’s (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) 10th-place mark in the 10k (33:31.00). Marshall Murray (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) competed in two events for Bethany, finishing 26th in the 800 (2:09.03).
On the women’s side, distance runner Kelsea Martz (Hedgesville, W. Va./Hedgesville) posted a 14th-place finish in the 5k, dropping her personal-best time by nearly 20 seconds, finishing with a 20:08.13. Junior Lauren Simpson (Washington, Pa./Trinity) ran in two events, finishing 14th in the 1,500-meter run (5:26.73) and 17th in the 800 (2:39.35).
The Bison will return to the track on Saturday where they will compete in the second day of the two-day event. Field events are slated for a 9 a.m. start, with the track events getting underway at 9:30.
