Sept. 25 - WEXFORD, Pa. – The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) has selected Bethany College senior Lauren Spegal (Bethel Park, Pa.) as its Volleyball Player of the Week for Sept. 24.
Spegal averaged 5.5 kills and 3.4 digs per game while recording a hitting percentage of .384 in a 2-0 week for the Bison (5-8, 1-2). Against Franciscan (Ohio) University last Monday, the 5-9 outside hitter set a new career-high with 28 kills and brought up 22 digs, as BC rallied from a game down to post a 3-2 victory.
Two nights later, Spegal led the Bison to their first conference win of the season. She tallied 16 kills, five digs and three aces in the 3-0 win over Chatham (Pa.) University.
“Lauren had a great week both offensively and defensively,” said first-year Bethany head coach Courtney Kline. “She made the most of her opportunities to put the ball away and made some great defensive plays against both Franciscan and Chatham.”
The 44 kills she recorded last week now gives Spegal 1,074 for her career, leaving her 14 away from surpassing Vicki Hill (1, 087) for second place on the all-time kills list at Bethany. She also has moved into a tie for 10th place at the school in career aces (107) and with 850 career digs, is likely to crack the all-time top 10 at BC in that category as well (10th place currently belongs to Holly Sensenich with 947).
For this season, Spegal is one of the top hitters in the PAC, as she ranks second in the conference with 4.14 kills per game. In addition, she is rated fourth in the circuit with 0.56 aces per game.
An elementary/special education major, Lauren is the daughter of Mary and Steve Spegal of Bethel Park, Pa.
