BETHANY COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AGAINST W&J IN FINALE

Oct. 30 - BETHANY, W.Va. – Trailing by two sets, the Bethany volleyball team rallied to force a fifth and deciding set, but visiting Washington & Jefferson was able to escape with a 3-2 (25-17, 26-24, 17-25, 23-25, 15-9) victory over the Bison in their season finale Thursday.

The Presidents (15-10, 10-4) looked like they would breeze to the game one win when they pulled out to a 21-10 lead. The Bison (5-24, 2-12) set the tone for the night when they came back with seven straight points. Freshman Tiffany Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) served three consecutive aces and freshman Emily Tevis (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek) had a kill to bring BC within four at 21-17, but W&J closed out the set by scoring four straight.

The second set was close throughout, with neither team holding larger than a four-point lead. Bethany put themselves in position to even the contest when back-to-back kills from senior Sumer Scott (Triadelphia, W.Va./Wheeling Park) gave BC a 24-22 lead. However, another late run by the Presidents gave them the 2-0 lead, as they rolled off four consecutive points again to move into the third set.

Needing a win to keep the match going, the Bison streaked out to a 7-1 lead, only to see W&J roar back to take a 9-8 advantage. The visitors were in front 11-9 before Bethany scored six in a row to seize control. A kill from Scott started the spurt, which was followed by back-to-back putaways from sophomore Emily Stewart (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe). Bethany would build a 24-17 margin and push the night to another set when freshman Alyssa Schrecengost (Wexford, Pa./Vincentian) hammered the finishing kill.

Set number 4 was back-and-forth from the start, as Bethany held the biggest lead at 8-5, but it was a one-point game the majority of the time. The Bison looked like they finally gained control of the set when they had a 24-21 lead, but the Presidents once again made a late run, scoring twice and serving to tie the score. BC would hold off this challenge, as Schrecengost blasted another kill to wrap up the win in the fourth and send Bethany to a fifth set for the seventh time this season.

Although the Green and White were winless in their previous six ventures to fifth sets, they looked good early in this one. Kills from freshman Carrie Talkington (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) and Schrecengost were sandwiched around an ace from freshman Megan Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) for a 3-1 BC lead. W&J answered back by taking six straight points for a 10-5 lead. Although Bethany was able to cut it to 11-9 off kills from Stewart and Schrecengost, the Presidents kept to their pattern of the night, recording the final four points to close out the set and match.

Bethany featured a balanced attack in the narrow setback. Schrecengost posted 14 kills and 11 digs, while Stewart had nine. Megan Hoffman finished her freshman season with 37 assists, which gives her 796 on the year, the eighth-highest total in Bethany single-season history.

Other key numbers registered by the Bison included sophomore Sarah Olson (Rices Landing, Pa./Jefferson-Morgan) with a team-high 13 digs and Tiffany Hoffman bringing up 10 digs to go along with six aces. Up front, Talkington had five solo blocks and one assist.

Scott, who was honored prior to the match as the lone senior on the Bethany roster, closed her career on a high note with eight kills and three solo blocks.
