Oct. 1 - CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Bethany College volleyball team (19-1, 8-1) increased its status to leader in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) by convincingly defeating host Thomas More and Geneva in a PAC tri-match Saturday afternoon in Crestview Hills, Ky.
To continue its record-setting ways this season, the Bison began the tri-match by defeating the defending conference champion, Thomas More (9-7, 5-2), a first for the Bethany program. All three sets of the match went to the Bison, as they beat the Saints 25-20, 25-18, and 25-19. The win was a total team effort as junior Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) dished out 33 assists, while senior Carrie Talkington (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) and junior Taylor Cassidy (Barboursville, W.Va./Cabell Midland) each had nine kills.
The back row was led by senior Tiffany Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn), who recorded a total of 19 digs.
The Bison then had to come right back to play the Golden Tornadoes of Geneva (12-7, 7-1), who were the PAC leaders at the time, but BC defeated them in four sets. The first set went to Geneva, as they defeated Bethany 25-18, but the Bison bounced right back and won the following three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-16, and 25-18.
The Bison dominance was led by much of the same leaders, as Zavatchen recorded 41 assists, Talkington threw down 16 kills, and Hoffman had an even better performance with 23 digs.
The enormous PAC victories give the Green and White even more momentum as they continue PAC play on Wednesday, Oct. 5th. That’s when Bethany hosts Westminster, who is the only team to defeat the Bison this year with a 3-1 decision on Sept. 23, in a 7:00 p.m. start at the Hummel Field House.
