BETHANY DROPS PAC MATCH TO WESTMINSTER

Sept. 26 - BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College volleyball team fell to 5-9 overall and 1-3 in the PAC with a 3-0 loss (18-30, 26-30, 30-32) to visiting Westminster (Pa.) College (6-10, 3-0) Wednesday night.

Bethany senior Lauren Spegal (Bethel Park, Pa.), who added ECAC South Region Player of the Week honors Wednesday to her PAC accolade from earlier in the week, had five kills in the initial game, but the Titans gradually pulled away for the 30-18 win to open the match.

Game two was a different story, as the Bison stayed right with Westminster from start to finish. The Titans twice took four-point leads, but BC would battle back to tie it at 24-24 on a tip by freshman Emily Stewart (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe), one of four kills by her in the game. However, Westminster would claim the 2-0 lead by scoring six of the final eight points for the 30-26 win.

The Bison would once again battle back in the third game to nearly force a fourth. Trailing 24-19, BC tallied eight of the nine points and when sophomore Rachael Dunham (Gans, Pa./Albert Gallatin) served an ace, the Green and White held a 27-25 lead.

Westminster would respond by scoring three straight to take the lead, then after the squads exchanged points, the Titans scored two in a row to pull out the 32-30 win and come away with the hard-earned sweep.

Stewart led the Bison attack by registering 11 kills, while Spegal was right behind her with 10. Junior setter Kim McKay (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) gave out 35 assists on the night, while defensively, BC had three finish in double figures in digs, led by freshman Sarah Olson (Rices Landing, Pa./Jefferson-Morgan) with 19. Spegal also notched 13, while senior Michelle Fowler (Mather, Pa./Jefferson-Morgan) brought up 12.

Bethany will return to the court again this Saturday when they travel to Thiel (Pa.) College for a tri-match. The Bison will play Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College at 1 p.m. before taking on the host Tomcats at 3 p.m.
