Oct. 15 – GREENVILLE, Pa. – After dropping the first two games Saturday at Thiel, the Bethany College volleyball team recovered to take the third, but the hole was too big to climb out of and the Bison suffered a 3-1 loss (11-25, 19-25, 25-15, 24-26) to the Tomcats.

The defeat was just the second in the last 11 matches for the Bison, who fall to 23-3 overall and 10-2 in the PAC. Thiel raised its marks to 15-8 overall and 10-4 in the league.

The Tomcats claimed the first game behind the strength of a 14-6 closing run for a 25-11 win. In the second game, the score was tight at 15-13 in TC’s favor when the home team again closed with a flourish, taking 10 of the final 14 points to complete a 25-19 win and go ahead 2-0.

The third game was Bethany’s turn for big runs. Trailing 8-2, the Green and White tore off seven consecutive points to take their first lead of the night at 9-8. Another run later in the game, this time a string of eight straight points, boosted the Bison to a 25-15 win and forced the match to a fourth game.

The final game would go down to the wire. Bethany led 22-21, but for the third time on the night, Thiel made a big run at the end, scoring five of the last seven points to complete a 26-24 win and even the season series with the Bison, who won the first meeting between the teams in a five-set thriller back on Sept. 17.

Leading the BC efforts were senior Carrie Talkington (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) with 14 kills, junior Jessica Zavatachen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) with 40 assists and senior Tiffany Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn), who totaled 27 digs.

Bethany will be back on its home floor for its next match, as the Bison host Grove City Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
