BETHANY LOSES FIRST HOME MATCH OF THE SEASON
Oct. 20 -BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College volleyball team dropped their first home match of the season Tuesday night against conference foe Thomas More 3-0. The loss dropped the Bison’s record to 19-10 and 7-5 in the PAC.
The opening set saw the Saints jump out to an 11-3 lead. A block by sophomore Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) and kill by sophomore Taylor Cassidy (Barboursville, W.Va./Cabell Midland) cut the lead to 12-8. From there the Saints scored five straight points. The set ended with BC and Thomas More alternating scores, although Thomas More would cap it off with three straight to win 25-16.
Bethany came out with more energy in the second set, taking the early advantage with kills by Cassidy and junior Carrie Talkington (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall). The Bison built a 7-3 lead with Talkington’s three kills, Cassidy’s two kills and service aces from Zavatchen and sophomore Katie Kurtz (Charleroi, Pa.). The Saints then scored six of the next eight points cutting the deficient to two, but kills by sophomore Meredith Holl (Mogadore, Ohio) and Cassidy helped push the lead back to four. The Bison then reached a 19-13 lead, with Talkington highlighting the run with four kills of her own. Thomas More would rally to score 12 of the last 14 points to take the set 25-21.
Talkington started the third set with another kill, giving the Bison some momentum. Six points later, Zavatchen’s ace put BC up 4-3. The rest of the set saw the teams alternating points, with the largest lead growing to only five. Talkington had another good set offensively, totaling five kills and a service ace. With the score deadlocked at 15, Thomas More took seven of the next nine points and held on from there for a 25-20 win.
The Bison were led offensively by Talkington’s 13 kills and Cassidy’s eight kills, while Zavatchen dished out 23 assists, had two service aces and added a team-high 12 digs. Junior Jessica Cole (Connellsville, Pa.) also had 12 digs, while junior Tiffany Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) chipped in 11 digs for the defense.
The Bison are back in action Thursday, Oct. 21st at Grove City. The PAC match is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
