Sept. 7 - HANOVER, Ind. – The Bethany College volleyball team began the Hanover Tournament Friday night with 3-0 wins over Spalding (Ky.) University (28-26, 25-22, 25-15) and Anderson (Ind.) University (25-9, 25-19, 25-18).
The Bison improved to 6-2 overall with the two wins. In the victory over Spalding, senior Lauren Goodwill (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) led the team with nine kills, while sophomore Breana Harris (Severn, Md./Old Mill) had eight kills and four blocks. Senior Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) sent out 32 assists to pace the attack.
A trio of BC players notched double figures in digs, led by senior Katie Kurtz (Charleroi, Pa.) with a dozen and senior Taylor Cassidy (Barboursville, W.Va./Cabell Midland) and sophomore Kelly Becquet (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) registered 10 apiece.
Bethany grabbed control of the second match with Anderson immediately, dominating the first set with a 25-9 win and then finishing off the sweep with two more solid wins. Zavatchen headlined the effort with a double-double by passing off 33 assists and bringing up 13 digs.
The top hitter up front was Cassidy, as she pounded down 13 kills. Harris had five kills and four blocks, including three solos, and joining Zavatchen atop the team in digs was freshman Julia Mouch (Toledo, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) with 11.
The Bison will take the floor twice more on Saturday to complete the tournament. The Green and White will take on Ohio Northern, who also won twice on Friday, at 12 p.m. and Bethany will close out the weekend by facing Hanover, who is 3-4 overall after splitting two matches Friday night. That contest will start at 2 p.m.
