BETHANY RECORDS SEVENTH WIN WITH 3-0 DECISION

Oct. 12 - BETHANY, W.Va. – With a 3-0 win (30-21, 30-22, 30-23) over LaRoche (Pa.) College Friday night, the Bethany College volleyball (7-15) equaled its victory total from the 2006 season with eight matches left this year.

The Bison stormed out of the gates against the Redhawks (2-20), as six kills from senior Lauren Spegal (Bethel Park, Pa.) sparked a 20-3 BC run to open game one. LaRoche would rally to trim the Bethany lead to 28-20, but a kill from junior Sumer Scott (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) slammed the door on the comeback, as the Bison finished the 30-21 win.

Game two saw the Redhawks come out strong, as they surged out to a 9-6 advantage. But two kills from Scott sandwiched around a putaway by freshman Emily Stewart (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) rallied the Bison into the lead and they never trailed again. Another spurt later in the game from Spegal, who had four kills in six points, helped BC pull away for the 30-22 triumph.

The Green and White took an early 7-2 lead in the third and final game, and LaRoche was never closer than four the rest of way. Spegal would deliver six more kills to help the Bison clinch their second win of the year over LaRoche, as BC also pulled out a 3-1 victory over the Redhawks Sept. 1 at the Ohio Wesleyan Tournament.

Once again leading the Bison offense was Spegal, who finished with 18 kills and is now within striking distance of the all-time kills record at Bethany. She currently has 1,190, leaving her eight shy from surpassing Kelly Sitko’s mark of 1,197.

Also highlighting the match was junior Kim McKay (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) giving out 27 assists and sophomore Rachael Dunham (Gans, Pa./Albert Gallatin) totaling 17 digs.

Spegal will go for the record on Tuesday, Oct. 16, when Bethany hosts Thiel (Pa.) College in Hummel Field House at 7 p.m. Spegal had 12 kills in the first meeting earlier this season between the teams, a 3-1 Tomcat victory in Greenville on Sept. 29.
