Sept. 11 - GREENVILLE, Pa. – After opening PAC play with a 3-0 victory over Washington & Jefferson, the Bethany College volleyball team suffered their first loss of the year when they dropped a 3-0 decision at Thiel, who hosted the PAC tri-match Saturday afternoon.

The Bison’s day started with a match-up against W&J, the first time the teams have faced since the Presidents eliminated Bethany from last year’s conference tournament with a 3-2 decision in the quarterfinals. BC was able to get a measure of revenge with a 3-0 win that was close throughout, with set scores finishing at 29-27, 25-20, 26-24. Sophomore Taylor Cassidy (Barboursville, W.Va./Cabell Midland) led the hitters with 11 kills, while junior Carrie Talkington (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) and sophomore Lauren Goodwill (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) both had nine.

Sophomore setter Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) passed out 31 assists, while leading the defense was junior Tiffany Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) and junior Jessica Cole (Connellsville, Pa.) with 12 digs apiece and Talkington totaled nine solo blocks and five assisted blocks.

Bethany would taste defeat for the first time in 2010 with their second match, as Thiel swept all three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-16, 28-26, which put BC’s records at 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the PAC. Talkington was the lone Bison to reach double digits in kills with 10 and Zavatchen registered 24 assists. Tiffany Hoffman led the team again with 15 digs, while twin sister Megan brought up 11.

The Bison will be back on the court Thursday with a non-conference match at Pitt-Greensburg. Bethany will return to PAC action next Saturday when they host Geneva and Grove City in a tri-match at Hummel Field House.
