Sept. 9 - BETHANY, W.Va. – After leading the Bethany College volleyball team to a first place finish at last weekend’s Marietta Tournament, sophomore setter Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) was selected as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Player of the Week for Sept. 7.
This is actually the second consecutive time Zavatchen has earned PAC Player of the Week accolades, as she also earned the distinction during the final week for the regular season in 2009. Her honor this year comes after she averaged 36.25 assists to lead the Bison to a 4-0 record at the tournament with 3-0 victories over LaGrange and Penn State Behrend and 3-1 triumphs over Denison and Kenyon. Bethany and Marietta both went 4-0 during the tournament, but BC was awarded first place due to fewer sets lost.
Bethany’s outstanding start to 2010 continued Wednesday with a 3-0 victory over Franciscan, which gives the Bison their first 5-0 start in school history. Zavatchen again sparked the offense with 37 assists and after setting the College’s single-season record with 989 assists last year, she has already climbed to seventh place on the school’s all-time list with 1,171.
“Jessica has had a great start to this season,” said Bethany head coach Courtney Kline. “She has done an excellent job of distributing the offense and getting all of our hitters involved, which has been key to our success thus far. She has also blocked well and done some good things offensively as well.”
A pre-physical therapy major, Jessica is the daughter of Jeanne & Michael Zavatchen of Uniontown, Pa.
