BISON BACK ON TRACK WITH 3-0 WIN OVER WAYNESBURG
Oct. 12 - BETHANY, W.Va. –With a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-14, 25-11) over visiting Waynesburg Tuesday, the Bethany College volleyball team (17-6, 6-4) not only snapped a three-game losing streak but also eclipsed their win total from last year.
In the opening set, the Bison, who are now 6-0 at Hummel Field House this season, couldn’t pull away from the Yellow Jackets (7-15, 1-9). A six-point lead was trimmed down to 18-15, but a kill from sophomore Taylor Cassidy (Barboursville, W.Va./Cabell Midland) turned the tide, as BC scored seven of the last 10 points in the set to move in front 1-0.
In the second set, a kill by sophomore Katie Kurtz (Charleroi, Pa.) gave Bethany a 13-4 lead. Waynesburg tried to get back in the set by cutting the deficit to 16-10, but a pair of aces by Kurtz stopped the Yellow Jacket momentum and junior Jessica Cole (Connellsville, Pa.) hammered kills for three of BC’s final six points to push the home team to a 2-0 advantage.
The final set was close until the Bison ran away with it late to close out the victory. Two straight points from the Yellow Jackets brought them within 14-11, but Cole ripped another kill and would deliver two more during an 11-0 spurt that completed the sweep. With its 17th victory of the season, the Bison surpass last year’s mark (16-15) to make this the winningest season since the program won 22 games in 1992.
In addition to being the most overall wins since 1992, the Bison now have six victories in the conference, which is the most since finishing 6-2 in league play during the ’92 campaign.
Sophomore Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) spearheaded the Bison attack Tuesday with 35 assists and matched junior Carrie Talkington (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) for team-high with five blocks. Cassidy led the hitters with 11 kills, while Cole finished with nine. Junior Tiffany Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) brought up 14 digs in the back and Kurtz chipped in with four aces.
Next up for Bethany is a visit from Saint Vincent on Thursday night. The Bearcats defeated BC 3-1 in their first meeting Oct. 2 as part of a tri-match in Latrobe. Start time on Thursday is set for 7 p.m.
