Sept. 19 - BETHANY, W.Va. – Senior Lauren Spegal (Bethel Park, Pa.) hammered down 16 kills, as the Bethany College volleyball team won its first PAC match of the season Wednesday night by a 3-0 score (30-15, 30-17, 30-15) over visiting Chatham (Pa.) University (1-10, 0-3).
Spegal got off to a quick start, as she had six kills in the opening game, which saw BC (5-8, 1-2) race to an early 17-5 lead and cruise from there. In the second game, the Bison took a 20-9 lead on three straight kills from Spegal, but the Cougars clawed back to within 22-16.
However, that was as close as they got, as junior Mandy Kaufman’s (Glen Dale, W.Va./John Marshall) kill, one of her five during game two, started a string of five straight points for the Bison. Spegal’s sixth kill of the game finished the 30-17 Green and White win.
The final game was also tight midway though, as BC held a 14-12 advantage. They pushed their lead to 20-14 before three consecutive aces from Spegal helped the Bison pull away for the clinching 30-15 triumph.
Spegal was the only Bison to reach double figures in kill on the evening, but three different Bison had five or more, including freshman Brittani Hall (Magnolia, Ohio/Spring Valley) with six and Kaufman and freshman Emily Stewart (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe), who each delivered five.
Setting up the attack was junior setter Kim McKay (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), who finished with 32 assists. Serving up a team-high five aces was senior Michelle Fowler (Mather, Pa./Jefferson-Morgan), while the defensive efforts were paced by freshman Lindsay Olson (Rices Landing, Pa./Jefferson-Morgan).
Bethany will now take a week off before returning to PAC action with a home match against Westminster (Pa.) College next Wednesday (Sept. 26) at 7 p.m.
