Bison Come Away With Hard-Fought 3-1 Win at Westminster
Oct. 2 - NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Senior Taylor Cassidy (Barboursville, W.Va./Cabell Midland) pounded down a match-high 22 kills, including the 1,000th of her career, as the Bethany College volleyball team came away from Westminster with an intense 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 25-22) victory.
An incredibly efficient Bison attack triggered a late surge in the opening set to give BC a 1-0 lead. The Titans led 20-16 before Bethany (17-4, 8-1) tore off a 9-2 run to give the Green and White the first set. Sophomores Jordan Fenner (right-Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) and Breana Harris (Severan, Md./Old Mill) both had four kills in the set, which featured the Bison putting away 17 kills with only one error in 30 attacks.
The tables were turned in the second set by Westminster. Bethany streaked out to a quick 12-4 lead and still looked to be in control at 19-13. This time it was the Titans with a big comeback, as they fired off 12 of the next 15 points to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 triumph.
Bethany seemed to put that set behind them quickly, rolling out to a 20-11 advantage before Westminster took their second timeout. The Titans started chipping away slowly at the lead and then with BC sitting on set point, the home team scored four straight to get within one at 24-23. The Bison finally put the set away and went up 2-1 on a Cassidy spike, her seventh of the set, and Bethany was a set away from victory.
As was the case all night, the fourth set would go down to the wire. The Titans were in front 18-14 following a pair of Bison errors, but then three kills by Cassidy and one from sophomore Megan Beebe (Irondale, Ohio/Indian Creek) ignited a 7-0 surge that pushed the Green and White out to a 21-18 lead. Bethany’s lead was at 23-21 when Harris stepped up, scoring the final two points for BC with kills and the Bison secured the win which kept them right on Thomas More’s (14-4, 7-0) heels for first place in the conference.
A trio of Bison had double-digit kills, led by Cassidy (right). Her 22 not only led the team, but also gives her 1,016 in her career and makes Cassidy just the fifth Bethany player in program history to reach that milestone, joining Lauren Spegal (1,289), Kelly Sitko (1,197), Carrie Talkington (1,161) and Vicki Hill (1,087).
Also posting big nights at the net were Fenner with 13 kills and a .545 hitting percentage, while Harris recorded 10 kills and a match-best six blocks. Senior setter Jessica Zavatchen engineered the proficient attack with 53 assists. The back row also featured a trio with 10+ digs, led by sophomore Kelly Becquet (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) with 15, freshman Julia Mouch (Toledo, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) with 14 and senior Katie Kurtz (Charleroi, Pa.), who had a dozen digs and two aces.
Bethany will go right back on the road for its next PAC match, which is scheduled for Thursday night at Grove City. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
