Sept. 29 - GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Bethany College volleyball team dropped a pair of Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) matches Saturday afternoon in a tri-match at Thiel (Pa.) College, which lowered their record to 5-11 overall and 1-5 in the league.
The Bison opened the day with a match against Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College and dropped a 3-1 (20-30, 23-30, 30-24, 15-30) decision. Senior Lauren Spegal (Bethel Park, Pa.) led BC with 15 kills and also posted 17 digs. Junior Kim McKay (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) handed out 24 assists in the loss, while freshman Sarah Olson (Rices Landing, Pa./Jefferson-Morgan) led the defensive efforts with 20 digs.
In their second match, Bethany would also suffer a 3-1 setback (18-30, 30-27, 22-30, 20-30). Freshman Emily Stewart (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) recorded a team-high 13 kills, while Spegal was right behind her with 12. McKay totaled 33 assists, while three Bison were in double figures with digs, including Spegal (19), Sarah Olson (15) and senior Michelle Fowler (Mather, Pa./Jefferson-Morgan), who also had 15.
Spegal’s 27 kills on the day gives her 1,111 for her career and moved her past Vicki Hill (1,087) for second place on the all-time list. She is now just 87 away from passing Kelly Sitko (1,197) for the all-time record at Bethany.
The Bison are now off for a week before hosting a quad-match at Hummel Field House next Saturday. Bethany will take on Thomas More (Ky.) College at 10 a.m. before facing Geneva (Pa.) College at 12 p.m. The day will conclude with a 3 p.m. contest against Saint Vincent (Pa.) College.
