BISON ROLL ON TO 6-0 START WITH WIN AT OHIO WESLEYAN
Sept. 10 - DELAWARE, Ohio – Sophomores Taylor Cassidy (Barboursville, W.Va./Cabel Midland) and Meredith Holl (Mogadore, Ohio) had 12 and 11 kills, respectively, to lead the Bethany College volleyball team to a 3-0 victory at Ohio Wesleyan Friday night, which improved the Bison’s record to 6-0 this season.
Holl was the spark in the opening set, as she delivered four kills during an opening 12-3 run to begin the match. The Bishops (1-6) rallied to get within 16-13, but a kill by Holl gave momentum back to the Bison. They went on to score nine of the final 10 points of the set, with the final tally coming on another Holl kill to conclude the 25-14 victory.
The second set was even at 9-9 until BC started to pull away. Consecutive putaways by sophomore Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) and Holl helped put Bethany ahead for good and OWU, who committed nine attacking errors during the set, had four in a row to open the deficit to eight points, allowing the Bison to go on to another 25-14 triumph for a 2-0 advantage.
Bethany’s 25-18 victory came in the third set when they closed out OWU with an 8-1 run. The Bison led by as many as five early in the set before the Bishops came back to tie the score at 17-17. That’s when BC turned to Cassidy, whose three straight kills gave the Green and White the lead at 20-17. Cassidy had three more kills, including the final point to close out the Bison’s sixth consecutive win to open the year.
Cassidy paced the Bison attack with 12 kills and just two errors in 25 attacks (.400 hitting percentage) and Holl’s 11 kills came in 18 attacks with three errors (.444). Zavatchen passed out 34 assists, her sixth match this year with 30+ assists, and the defense was led by junior Tiffany Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) with 12 digs and junior Jessica Cole (Connellsville, Pa.) with 11.
The Bison have little time to enjoy their continued success to open the year, as they are back on the floor Saturday in a tri-match at Thiel to open the PAC schedule. Bethany will take on Washington & Jefferson at 1 p.m. and then play Thiel at 3 p.m.
