BISON SCORE TWO MORE WINS TO IMPROVE TO 14-2
Sept. 28 - BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College volleyball team hosted a tri-match Tuesday, first sweeping past Chatham 3-0 in a PAC match before taking out Penn State-Fayette 3-0, which moved their records to 14-2 overall and 4-1 in the PAC.
Three kills early from junior Jessica Cole (Connellsville, Pa.) sparked the Bison to an 11-1 spurt to open the first set against Chatham. The Cougars scored seven of the next eight points to get within 12-8, but kills by sophomores Meredith Holl (Mogadore, Ohio) and Taylor Cassidy (Barboursville, W.Va./Cabell Midland) were followed by an ace from junior Alyssa Schrecengost (Wexford, Pa./Vincentian) and BC continued to pull away for an opening 25-11 victory.
The second set went back-and-forth throughout until Chatham scored two straight to move to set point at 24-22. But Bethany roared back with a kill from sophomore Lauren Goodwill (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) and three straight from Holl to close out the comeback for a 26-24 win to make it a 2-0 Bison lead.
Bethany trailed 7-6 in the third set but two aces from Schrecengost helped turn the tide and the Green and White pulled away for a 25-16 match-closing victory. Junior Carrie Talkington (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) posted four of her team-best 10 kills during the final set, while sophomore setter Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) passed out 38 assists and brought up 10 digs.
Zavatchen was just one of four Bison with double-digit kills in the victory, as Cole totaled 15, junior Megan Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) finished with 14 and junior Tiffany Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) also notched 10.
In the final match of the night against Penn State-Fayette, BC ran off the first four points and never looked back in taking a 25-16 first set decision. Cassidy planted three kills to account for the final Bison points in the set. Bethany kept the momentum in the second set, as four kills early from Goodwill pushed the home team to an 11-3 advantage and a trio of aces later in the set from senior Sarah Olson (Rices Landing, Pa./Jefferson-Morgan) helped the Bison claim a 25-9 win to go in front 2-0.
The win was capped off by a 25-13 outcome in the third set, as seven different Bison recorded kills. Goodwill led the Green and White hitters with nine kills for the match, while Zavatchen turned in 33 assists and Tiffany Hoffman led the backrow with 10 digs and Talkington aided on six assisted blocks up front.
Bethany will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Saint Vincent for a big tri-match. The Bison will take on the host Bearcats (14-3, 4-0) in the opening match-up at 11 a.m., then square off with Mount Aloysius in a non-conference tilt at 1 p.m.
