Sept. 4 - PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Bethany volleyball team recovered from a loss to Marietta to start the day by sweeping past Franciscan in their second match, as the Bison opened play at the LaRoche Tournament Friday night.

In the opening match of the day, Marietta (25-16) and Bethany (25-15) split the first two sets, but the Pioneers claimed the last two by scores of 25-17 and 25-16 to pick up the victory. Bison sophomore Alyssa Schrecengost (Wexford, Pa./Vincentian) led the Green and White attack with 10 kills and 13 digs, while freshman Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) passed out 28 assists and sophomore Tiffany Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) brought up 24 digs.

After a short break, BC returned to the court and improved to 2-1 on the year with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-19) victory over Franciscan, their second win in the last three nights over the Barons after a 3-1 triumph in Wednesday’s season opener.

Schrecengost again led the hitters with nine kills and added in three aces. Zavatchen finished with 22 assists and Hoffman was again the leader with 14 digs and also matched Schrecengost with three aces.

Bethany will begin day two of the tourney Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. against Penn State-Beaver to complete pool play.
