Sept. 6 - PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Bethany College volleyball team recovered from a loss in their season opener Wednesday by going 2-2 and taking fourth place at the LaRoche (Pa.) College Tournament over the weekend.
The Bison opened tournament play by scoring a 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-17) victory from Chatham Friday night. Freshman Alyssa Schrecengost (Wexford, Pa./Vincentian) posted nine kills and sophomore Emily Stewart (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) had eight to lead the hitters. Freshman setter Megan Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) started a big weekend with 27 assists and twin sister Tiffany Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) led the defense with nine digs.
Bethany improved to 2-0 in pool play with a four-set win over Point Park University’s “Gold” Team. The teams exchanged 25-23 decisions in the opening two sets, with BC winning the first. The Bison responded after dropping the tight second set by recording 25-16 and 25-18 victories to close out the match. Freshman Courtney Meadows (Canton, Ohio/McKinley) had a huge game with 19 kills. Senior Sumer Scott (Triadelphia, W.Va./Wheeling Park) was big at the net in two ways, nailing six kills and registering seven blocks. Megan (35 assists) and Tiffany (13 digs) Hoffman again led the team in their respective categories, although sophomore Sarah Olson (Rices Landing, Pa./Jefferson-Morgan) nearly matched Tiffany with 12 digs.
Moving into Saturday, the Bison were paired up with Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College in the final match of pool play. The two teams played two down-to-the-wire sets to start the match, with RWC squeaking out 29-27 and 26-24 wins. The Raiders would secure the triumph by taking the final set 25-13. Megan Hoffman set the table for the hitters with 30 assists, with Schrecengost being the main beneficiary with a dozen kills. Defensively, Tiffany Hoffman (16) and Olson (10) both reached double figures in digs again.
That loss put Bethany into the third place match against Pitt-Greensburg. The Bison fell into an 0-2 hole by dropping the first two sets 18-25 and 16-25, but the Green and White rallied to force a fifth game by taking two straight 25-15 and 25-14. However, the Bobcats weathered the storm to record a 15-9 win in the final set to force Bethany to settle for fourth place.
Stewart had her biggest match of the weekend with 15 kills, while Schrecengost amassed nine kills and served up six aces. Megan Hoffman had 31 assists, her third match of the weekend with 30+, while Tiffany Hoffman set a career-high with 23 digs and Olson notched 13.
The Bison will return to the court on Wednesday with a big early season match. Not only will it be their home opener, but it will also be the first PAC match of the season, as Thiel invades Hummel Field House. Start time is slated for 7 p.m.
