Sept. 11 - ERIE, Pa. – After having their three-game winning streak stopped with a 3-1 loss to Penn State Behrend, the Bethany volleyball team recovered to sweep Lycoming 3-0 on the opening day of the Penn State Behrend Tournament.

In the first match of the day, the Lions (3-3) took the first set 25-12, but the Bison evened the contest at 1-1 with a 25-22 victory in the second. The hosts would come away with the triumph by taking the third set 25-19 and the fourth 25-17.

Freshman Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) triggered the offense with 28 assists, with freshman Lauren Goodwill (Jackson, Ohio) delivering a team-high seven kills. Defensively, sophomore Tiffany Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) amassed a team-best 18 kills.

The Bison bounced right back after the loss to take down Lycoming 25-11, 25-20, 25-16 for their fifth victory of the year, which matches their entire win total from last year. Highlighting the triumph was Zavatchen with 24 assists, two solo blocks and one assisted block, while sophomore Alyssa Schrecengost (Wexford, Pa./Vincentian) hammered six aces.

Posting highs in kills were freshman Meredith Holl (Mogadore, Ohio) with eight kills and Goodwill with four.

Bethany will be back in action for a pair of matches Saturday. They will take on D’Youville at 10:30 a.m. before squaring off with Roberts Wesleyan at 12:30 p.m.
