Sept. 2 - STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Bethany volleyball team bounced back from a second set loss to win the last two and come away with a 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-15, 25-21) victory at Franciscan Wednesday night in the Bison’s season opener.

It’s the first time BC has opened a new campaign with a triumph since 2005 when the Green and White swept LaRoche 3-0 on their way to wins in their opening three matches.

Bethany started off on the right foot with a 25-18 win in the opening set behind three aces from sophomore Tiffany Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn). After the Barons (1-1) drew even by taking the second set, the Bison went in front with a comfortable 25-15 win in the third. Sophomore Carrie Talkington (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) and freshman Sarah Slagle (North Canton, Ohio/Perry) each pounded down four kills to lead the way.

Talkington spearheaded the decisive fourth set win by drilling another four kills and also posting three solo blocks. For the night, the 5-10 sophomore recorded team-highs in both kills (11) and blocks (five).

Three Bison reached double digits in digs in the victory, led by Hoffman, who also had five aces, with 21, while Slagle added in 17 digs to go along with seven kills and sophomore Alyssa Schrecengost (Wexford, Pa./Vincentian) brought up 14.

Triggering the offense was freshman setter Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) with 31 assists, as well as seven digs and four kills.

The Bison will look to stay unbeaten this weekend at the LaRoche Tournament. They will take on Marietta and Franciscan Friday night before closing pool play Saturday morning against Penn State-Beaver.
