Sept. 3 - BETHANY, W.Va. – Sophomore setter Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) passed out 64 assists on the day, as the Bethany College volleyball team started the new season with 3-0 wins over LaGrange and Penn State Behrend on the first day of the Marietta Tournament.

The Bison won their season opener for the second consecutive year by cruising in three sets over LaGrange by scores of 25-19, 25-7 and 25-13. Zavatchen passed out 33 assists in the win, with a balanced attack being paced by junior Jessica Cole (Connellsville, Pa.) with nine kills and junior Carrie Talkington (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) totaling eight kills. Junior Megan Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) led the defense with 10 digs and her four service aces were second on the team only to her sister Tiffany Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn), who smacked five aces.

In their second match of the day, Bethany took on Penn State Behrend, a team who knocked off the Bison 3-1 early last year. This season would see a far different result, as BC’s convincing 25-18, 25-7, 25-22 triumph gave the Green and White their first 2-0 start to a year since they went 3-0 to open the ’05 campaign.

Zavatchen’s passing again spearheaded the attack, as she collected 31 assists and added a pair of blocks. Taking top hitter honors for the match with eight kills apiece were sophomores Lauren Goodwill (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) and Meredith Holl (Mogadore, Ohio), who added in two blocks as well. Cole followed up her hitting effort in the opening match with a team-best 12 digs in the Behrend win, while Tiffany Hoffman brought up 11.

Bethany will try to stay undefeated with two more matches Saturday, as they take on Denison at 10:30 a.m. before facing Kenyon at 1:30 p.m.
