Nov. 25 - ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Bethany women’s basketball team shot just 33 percent for the game, but it still took an 8-for-8 effort from the foul line by Mount Union in the final 35 seconds for the Raiders (2-0) to clinch a 70-63 win over the Bison (1-2) Tuesday night.

The first half was back-and-forth, with four ties and nine lead changes. The largest advantage belonged to Bethany, who tallied seven consecutive points to take a 22-16 lead with seven minutes left, but Mount Union rallied right back. A jumper by BC senior Kaitlyn McCormick (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) gave Bethany a three-point lead at the 2:32 mark, but the Raiders scored the final four points of the period to take a 33-32 lead into halftime.

The second half was much like the first, as the teams swapped the lead six times and forged seven ties. The final tie came when Bethany freshman Anne Wilson (Saegertown, Pa./Cambridge Springs) drained a three with 3:59 to play to draw BC even at 55. The Raiders took the lead for good on two foul shots by Brooke Ghilani and then a jumper from Stephanie Schwartz. Bison senior Renee Brandenburg (Avella, Pa.) answered back with a jumper to bring the Green and White within a bucket at 59-57.

Mount Union pushed the lead to four with another basket and then took advantage of their trips to the charity stripe to put the game away. They sank 9-of-10 from the line in the final 48 seconds, including the last eight attempts to hold off the Bison.

Bethany, who was just 25-of-75 from the floor, including 5-for-16 from the arc, was led by Wilson. The freshman guard scored 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and also grabbed five rebounds. Senior Susannah Cartland (Harvard, Ill.) and sophomore Kelly Goode (Pleasant Plain, Ohio/Little Miami) each fired in 10, while McCormick notched eight points and a team-high seven rebounds and senior Caelyn DiSanti (Tarentum, Pa./North Catholic) had team-highs of five steals and three assists.

Mount Union’s four scorers in double digits were led by Schwartz with 12 and Amanda Rose with 11 markers, who also pulled in a game-high nine boards.

The Bison are off for the Thanksgiving break, but return shortly after the holiday to play at the Wilmington (Ohio) College Tournament over the weekend. BC will take on Wittenberg (Ohio) University Saturday at 8 p.m. in the first round. Bethany will face either Wilmington or Pitt-Bradford on Sunday at 1 or 3 p.m.
