Bethany Falls to 10th-Ranked Thomas More
Jan. 16 -BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College women’s basketball team could not slow down PAC leading and 10th-ranked Thomas More, as the Saints came away with a 95-42 victory over the Bison Wednesday night.
After BC junior Taylor Verrico (Monaca, Pa./Quigley) scored the opening basket of the game, the Saints (15-1, 9-0) scored five straight. Verrico (right) then had a conventional three-point play to tie the game, but TMC took control with nine consecutive points and continued to pull away through the half. Verrico had a big first half trying to keep Bethany close, as she scored the team’s first 15 points.
But while she made six of her first eight shots, the rest of the Bison went 0-for-11 until senior Kayla Taormina (Center Twp., Pa./Quigley) hit for two hoops in the final minute, but Thomas More had rolled out to 48-19 halftime lead. The second half saw the Saints continue to extend their advantage, as the Bison finished the night with 35 turnovers and shot just 30 percent from the floor.
The big first half by Verrico enabled her to score 19 points. It was her eighth game in a row with double digits and the second-most she’s tallied in a game in her career behind only the 21-point outing she had at Grove City back on December 1st. Taormina managed to score eight points and pulled down a team-best eight rebounds to help BC hold a 38-32 rebounding advantage over the Saints.
For Thomas More, who won its 12th consecutive game, Alison Long led all scorers with 23 points, while Jenny Burgoyne notched 15 and Stephanie Krusling came off the bench to tally 14.
Bethany’s second half of the PAC schedule gets underway Saturday with a road trip to Waynesburg, as the Bison look to avenge a 62-58 loss to the Yellow Jackets from November 28th. Tip-off is slated for 1:30 p.m.
