Bethany Loses at PAC Regular Season Champ Thomas More
Feb. 13 - CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – Seventh-ranked Thomas More clinched the PAC regular season title Wednesday night by downing the Bethany College women’s basketball team 92-46.
Two early scores by freshman Brianna Nuzum (Morgantown, W.Va.) had the Bison (7-17, 5-12) within a bucket at 6-4, but the rest of the half belonged to the Saints (23-1, 17-0). Thomas More scored 10 straight points and continued pulling away until their halftime lead stood at 45-17. The Bison were hampered by 21 first-half turnovers which led to 23 TMC points.
Although BC junior Taylor Verrico (Monaca, Pa./Quigley) scored 10 points in the second half, the Bison were unable to cut into the Thomas More lead. The Saints would coast to the victory as they picked up the regular season title and the top seed in next week’s PAC Tournament.
Despite the loss, Verrico (right) finished the night with her 16th straight game in double digits. She made all three of her three-point attempts to total 16 points and she added four boards. Senior Kayla Taormina (Center Twp., Pa./Quigley) had 10 points and eight rebounds in the game and Nuzum hit for nine markers.
Twelve different Saints scored in the game, led by Sydni Wainscott, who was 10-for-10 from the foul line as she tallied 24 points.
If Bethany wants to avoid a return trip to Thomas More next week in the opening round of the PAC Tournament, the Bison will need to win at Washington & Jefferson Saturday and hope Thiel loses to Grove City. The Bison’s game at W&J will tip-off at 2 p.m.
